Vintage Quilts - Pinwheel Stars

This is a 64- by 68-inch handmade quilt. The quilt top is handmade and hand-pieced using vintage green and yellow fabric, the backing is a cotton/poly fabric. The quilt is hand bound and uses poly/cotton batting to give the quilt a thicker loft. 

Hand sewn quilt top was is made up of a variety of green and yellow fabrics sewn into Pinwheel star blocks. This is a 36-block quilt in a checkered pattern with 18 solid blue blocks and 18 Pinwheel Star blocks. The backing for the quilt is from a cotton/poly blend fabric and is completed with a straight line quilted pattern.

A Pinwheel Star Block is a beginner friendly pattern that adds a fun little twist on a traditional star block that stands out as a charming and versatile block. The Pinwheel Star Quilt Block is a classic design that has graced quilts for generations. Its roots can be traced back to traditional quilting patterns that were often passed down through families and communities. The pinwheel motif, with its swirling appearance, adds a touch of whimsy to quilt designs, making it a perennial favorite among quilters. The center of the block creates the classic Pinwheel design which is a representation of the water pump windmills found on farms or small towns along the Oregon trails. It is noted that the Pinwheel block started to be used in quiltmaking in the late 1700's and was one of the first blocks used to make quilts that were decorative as well as functional.

Additionally, with handmade items there is always an element of human error, whether it be a missed stitch or overlapping design, yet for me the beauty is in the imperfection.
