Vintage Quilts - Vintage Feedsack Quilt
This a 63- by 72-inch handmade quilt. The quilt top is handmade and hand-pieced using feed sack fabric, the backing is a modern "repro" 100% cotton fabric. The quilt is hand bound and uses 80/20 batting.
Hand sewn quilt top was originally a tied quilt (circa 1940s) and was well used and loved. The quilt is made up of a variety of floral patterns in a striped pattern rotating between a solid strip and scrappy "stacked coin" strip. The backing for the quilt is from the Downton Abbey VINTAGE Collection from Andover and is completed with a floral quilted pattern.
Feed sack fabrics and quilts. Feed sack fabric could be more accurately called cotton sack fabric. In addition to animal feed, items such as flour and sugar, among other things, were also sold in cotton sacks. Until 1937, animal feed and consumables cotton bags were white/cream. While people used cotton bags for home goods and clothing, they would dye the feed sacks if they wanted something colorful. However, a bag company printed cotton sacks with a gingham print in the 1920s under the trade name "Gingham Girl Flour." By the late 1920s, various companies were producing designs and colors to attract (female) customers, called "dress print bags," and most were used during and after World War II.
Ready to ship. The quilt in the picture will be the quilt you receive, each quilt is handmade, so they are all unique - no two are alike. Additionally, with handmade items there is always an element of human error, whether it be a missed stitch or overlapping design, yet for me the beauty is in the imperfection.
